"And the people began to be distinguished by ranks, according to their riches and their chances for learning; yea, some were ignorant because of their poverty, and others did receive great learning because of their riches." 3 Nephi 6:12
My attitude on money is that where much is given, much is required. This week, we learned from a speech given at a BYU-I devotional by Stephen W. Gibson that the ways we see things are a combination of what filters others have placed in our minds. Some of my filters come from my parents. Some of my filters come from my husband and his family. Some of my filters come from good friends that I have observed and respect.
My views on money affect the way I live. I try to teach my children to work hard for the life they want. I am currently finishing my bachelor's degree and I am doing it in large part to show my four daughters how important an education is for women. My husband has a graduate degree and I supported him while he earned his education, but it wasn't until I had small children that I really regretted not finishing mine. 3 Nephi 6:12 "And the people began to be distinguished by ranks, according to their riches and their chances for learning." I want my children to value their opportunities for education and use it to bless others. I hope to do this as well.
I try to teach my children that the Lord blesses us so we can bless others. It is our responsibility to take care of the poor and needy. We can pray for them, but we must do for them also. Sometimes it is easy to donate money and sometimes that is what is needed, but I think more often it is a donation of time that makes a difference. I am grateful to be financially stable so I can use some of my discretionary time to serve and I hope my family will do that as well.
Stephen Gibson shared 6 steps if you want to prosper:
1. Seek the Lord and have hope in him
2. Keep the commandments
3. Think about money and how you can become self-reliant
4. Take advantage of chances for learning. "Education is the key to opportunity" - President Hinckley
5. Learn the laws upon which the blessings of wealth are predicated.
6. Do not send away the naked, the hungry, the thirsty, the sick or those who are held captive.
