"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose." - Romans 8:28
This week we read and watched Randy Pausch’s last lecture. It was titled “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams.” I read his book “The Last Lecture” many years ago. It’s the kind of stuff that sticks with you because this guy knew he was at the end of his life. He chose to spend some of his last days sharing what he has learned throughout his life with strangers. What he had learned mattered that much to him. He reached his dreams. I was inspired by how persistent he was in getting what he wanted. He didn’t give up. He said that they built brick walls around things not to keep things in and safe, but to keep those out who didn’t want it badly enough.
Lessons Learned:
Very few people, if any, will fall into their dreams and passions. Most, if not all, of us are going to have to work very hard to accomplish them. We may end up somewhere different from where we thought we were going. We surely will take a different path to get there than how we originally planned.
Some of my favorite lessons from Randy Pausch’s lecture:
- Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want
- Get the fundamentals down or the fancy stuff won’t work
- Enable the dreams of others
- Wait long enough and people will surprise and impress you
- How easy are you to work with?
- Decide if you’re a Tigger or an Eeyore
- When people give you feedback, cherish it and use it
- Don’t complain, just work harder
- Find the best in everybody
- Brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough
Lessons Not Yet Learned:
I am now questioning how badly I want things. How badly do I want to own my own business? Are those brick walls going to keep me out of my dreams? Am I willing to do the work it will take? Am I willing to start something even though I don’t know everything yet? I guess I’ll have to think harder about my answers.
